Record Shark Killed

By: Rowan Wolf

The big news for "fishing" enthusiasts is that a 1280 pound hammerhead shark was caught. That "record" catch is credited to Capt. Bucky Dennis. He used a stingray as bait, and the shark dragged his boat about 12 miles out to sea. Ultimately other fisherman gaffed the shark to death. Dennis ultimately donated the shark to the Mote Marine Laboratory in Sarasota, FL. Dennis intends to go out and try and catch a bigger one.

This story just made my heart sick. Dennis was not fishing to eat the shark. He just wanted to catch the record breaking hammerhead. Well he did. It was a female estimated to be 20 to 40 years old, and was pregnant at the time of its death. This creature (and next generation) died for a "record." This is truly a death with no purpose other than to stroke ego. I'm sure that the catch will draw equally committed "fisherman" to the area to try and out do each other. Who gets to keep the bragging rights for the biggest needless murder - Dennis or some other "fisherman?"
