Liberty Lost - Chaos Reigns

By: Rowan Wolf

A lot of things have changed since George W. Bush went into office in 2001. Maybe my bias shows in saying that I can't think of one of those changes that have been positive. But a series of changes are going on that go to a bigger issue, and perhaps link to the chaos that could reign if either peak oil or climate chaos occurs - and it seems certain that one or the other will while we go blithely about our "business."

From the moment that George Bush entered office, the fix was in. The crew that he brought with him had been planning for this moment for 30 years. All the pieces were in place to take total control of government, and soon, the courts.

The oil barons were in, and one by one the former criminals were brought back - such as John Negroponte. The plan to create Empire America was in full play, and detailed by Project for A New American Century in their report Rebuilding America's Defenses. Among the signatories to that document were I. Lewis Libby and Paul Wolfowitz. Jeb Bush, Dick Cheney, and Donald Rumsfeld are also intimately involved in PNAC. The "Rebuilding America," report runs eerily close to what became the National Defense Strategy of the United States. Plans for Iran, Iraq, and North Korea are prominently featured. In fact, if you want to see what the US has become, this 2000 document would be a good blue print to examine.

Then Bush hit the "trifecta." With the events of September 11, 2001, Bush's (and the neo-cons) ship had come in. Plans that would have taken effort to implement, suddenly became very easy. The gutting of the US treasury would be facilitated with an endless war. The military could be strategically reorganized for world domination; civil liberties eroded and police powers instituted; total transparency of the population could be achieved and the president could become a "unitary executive." Everything to make the US a fascist state with a dictator in power was within reach.

All of this would seem to be an egomaniacs dream come true, except that this group is tied to energy like no other. They know that peak oil is not a fantasy. They well know what we are heading for. They also know that global warming is not some environmentalist plot.

From well before Bush came into office, the US has been working out how to control the resources of the planet. Republican or Democrat, the military weapons systems were being developed to ensure the access of the US to the world's resources - including oil. Now those plans could be mobilized.

The group in power could have (and probably has) written and read the scenarios of what is rushing at us - the collapse of oil, water, and metals. The Pentagon has its climate collapse scenarios. All of them plan for fortress America and military control of global resources. Of course, such chaotic events are not going to miss the US population. The combination of desperation on one hand,  and the draconian measures to "secure supply" are going top leave an unruly public. It may be necessary to engage in triage of a political nature.

Suddenly a number of things come into sharp focus. The implementation of "free speech zones" to corral dissenters. The issue of "enemy combatants" who can be held without counsel indefinitely - even put to death. The stretch of the USA PATRIOT Act, and Bush's continued argument that mass spying on US citizens is within his powers as a "war president."

None of Bush's policies and initiatives take us towards either energy sanity or away from climate collapse. Instead, they are aimed to rush towards these catastrophic events with open arms. Meanwhile our rights and liberties are ripped apart, oversight and checks and balances are ridden down in the chant of "war without end." War without end is certainly a possible scenario as resources become increasingly scarce and more expensive.

Some think that the neo-cons are just power hungry. Perhaps the push for total power and control is a passing fancy of being drunk on controlling every branch of government. But we must remember that those currently in power have been working towards this moment for over 30 years. These are not folks that go off on flights of ecstasy and lose their senses. This is all going according to script. If we are unhappy about that, then the time to plant our feet and make a stand is here.
