ANWR Safe ... For Now
By: Rowan Wolf
Thanks to all of you and many more who pressured our legislators to pull drilling in the Alaskan National Wildlife Refuge from the 2006 Budget Reconciliation Act. While the Senate refused to do so and passed the budget, the House has ANWR pulled from the package. It is another victory, but it will not be the end of the struggle to open ANWR. Big oil wants it and the Bush administration wants it. We need a different approach here that would end this ongoing fight. I want legislation that specifically bans drilling and exploration in the refuge.
This time was a squeaker, and ANWR will certainly be tagged into other legislation. They keep hoping that we won't stay on guard, and they can slip it through. I think that the public has made it very clear that WE DON'T WANT THEM TO OPEN ANWR.
