Global Warming is a "Private Theory"
By: Rowan Wolf
I had hoped that since George Bush had come partially to his senses in admitting that global warming is happening and that humans are involved, that the corporate media would as well. Instead, I am hearing sound bite reports that nothing seems to be linked to global warming - particularly the weather. Last week it was a report that the record breaking hurricane season had nothing to do with global warming. But Brian Williams of NBC took the cake with his Monday night (7/25/05) report on the heat wave in the U.S. and its link to global warming.
The report - which lasted about one minute - "interviewed" a guy sitting in front of a computer (one assumes he had some climatological knowledge) who states that the heat wave across the U.S. Southwest had little to do with global warming. Williams than wraps up the segment that the comment that "people will have their private theories in spite of the facts." Excuse me? "Private theories?"
A "private theory" is another way of saying "personal opinion." Global warming is not a "personal opinion" or a "private theory." It is happening and happening fast. Ask the starving polar bears who are having the Arctic ice sheet melt out from under them if they have a "private theory."
I guess that after decades of playing the corporate game of "the book is out on global warming," and "there is inadequate evidence of global warming," and "global warming is a matter of opinion," that Williams (and other lap dogs) can't learn new "tricks." Maybe the word is that it isn't "profitable" to get folks worked up about this - particularly since the Bush administration refuses to do anything substantive beyond "talk" about it some more.
