In Search of Wild Carrots ... Part 2

By:

I originally was going to write a series of pieces on the wild plants we could consume as I was under the impression that the majority of wild plants had been so domesticated that nothing much grows wild anymore. What I learned, however, is that what is offered in the grocery stores is not all there is. We just do not consume what nature has to offer, but instead eat what is marketable.

Also, it might be more sensible to find books that are backpackable and identify plants more thoroughly according to personal region.

So then, researching for wild food sources is an individual choice for those who have the means and the physical ability to do so, though knowing where to start could be the challenge.

For those who are truly interested, I found some informative sites that are full of photos and information. They also provide a list of books you can order online, or maybe find in a bookstore or library. All one has to do is motivate, learn the tricks of the trade and find a place that allows such foraging for edible plants.

One of these sites offers many good reasons to "Dine on the Wild." Some of the reasons listed include disaster, preservation or study of Native American ways of life, and nutritional benefit. (Wild foods have not been stripped of nutritional value as domesticated foods have been.)

Another site gives video images of various food sources found in the wild. It is sponsored by a man referred to as "Wild Man." I personally think it would be beneficial for all of us who are able to learn what wild food sources are available and how to get them. Should we have to flee into the hills, we will be able to survive and help keep others from starving to death.
