Global Warming and Doubting Thomases
By: Rowan Wolf
The headline read, Damage from Warming Becoming 'Irreversible,' Says New Report (OneWorld.net, 3/15/04).
"We are quickly moving to the point where the damage will be irreversible," warned Dr. Jonathan Pershing, director of WRI's Climate, Energy and Pollution Program. "In fact, the latest scientific reports indicate that global warming is worsening. Unless we act now, the world will be locked into temperatures that would cause irreversible harm."
The US is responsible for about 25 % - 1/4 - of the global warming gas emissions, yet we do NOTHING. In fact Bush pulled us out to the Kyoto agreement, and in its stead recommend "voluntary" actions by corporations. Global warming is a hot topic, so why is the television media saying nothing about this?
Global warming, or catastrophic climate change, is the biggest threat possible in so many areas. It is a threat to global economic stability, to poverty and hunger issues, to social stability, to health, and yes to security. Even the Pentagon is planning for massive war due directly to climate change. How can we not be talking about this?
How we can keep rushing headlong at this cliff is beyond me. It is my opinion that the issues of global warming and environmental destruction should be in every news program, the front page of every paper, and at least weekly specials should be developed to the issues. That is the only way that the public - particularly the US public - is going to take this seriously.
I think that people are in denial. Have you heard any of these? "Oh, they don't even know if global warming is real." "A few degrees can't hurt anything." "I am so sick of these alarmists, and radical environmentalists trying to shove this down my throat - it's un-American." "Oh, those loonies." "That's hundreds of years away - if it happens at all."
It is suicidal to just go blindly on. But maybe that is just the point. Maybe we have reached the point of fatalism. In other words, it's going to happen and there is nothing I can do so I'm going to pretend that nothing is happening. Unfortunately, while folks are pretending that nothing is happening the possibility to change course, or at least prepare for what is happening, slips irretrievably through our fingers.
