Pick Your Spin On Bush Climate Change

By: Rowan

Pick your spin:

Bush strikes blow to Blair's hopes of global warming deal (Independent, 7/04/05)

OR

US close to climate change concessions (Guardian, 7/04/05).

The positive spin from the Guardian is that:

"US President George Bush is now ready to concede that climate change has scientific basis, and that collective action is required over global warming. Until now, Mr Bush has adopted an intransigent position, insisting there is no scientific basis to conclude that there is such a phenomenon as global warming."

Oh BOY!!! Bush admits there is a scientific basis. That's a big move. Now if he would just admit that "science" has any relevance we would really see snail's progress.

But: Bush refuses to consider reducing emissions. I guess that his grasp of "science" doesn't stretch quite that far (cause and effect). He is pinning his hopes on "new technology" (such as carbon sequestration) to deal with the emissions problem. Should I even mention that carbon sequestration is a DUMB idea?

The article in the Independent doesn't see Bush's concession to "science" as major movement towards address global warming - excuse me "climate change" as Bush would say. Bush is still blocking any attempt on a "Kyoto type" of agreement. Blair downplayed Bush's lack of support. The ongoing issue of Blair pushing UK support for the US invasion of Iraq would seem to deserve some concessions on the part of Bush, but Bush apparently doesn't see it that way.
